ഒരു കാര്യം നടന്നാൽ മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം നടക്കും (അല്ലെങ്കിൽ നടക്കുമായിരുന്നു) എന്ന് പറയാൻ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതാണ് Conditional Sentences അഥവാ If Clauses. പി.എസ്.സി പരീക്ഷയിൽ പ്രധാനമായും 3 തരത്തിലുള്ള കണ്ടീഷനുകളാണ് ചോദിക്കാറുള്ളത്.
- Type 1: നടക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയുള്ളത് (Probable).
- Type 2: നടക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയില്ലാത്തത് / ഭാവന (Improbable/Imaginary).
- Type 3: നടക്കാതെ പോയത് / ഖേദം (Impossible/Regret).
Type 1: Open Condition (Probable)
വർത്തമാന കാലത്തോ ഭാവിയിലോ നടക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയുള്ള കാര്യങ്ങൾ.
💡 Formula
If + V1 (Present) ---------> Will + V1Eg: If you study well, you will pass.
(നീ നന്നായി പഠിച്ചാൽ, നിനക്ക് ജയിക്കാം - ഇത് നടക്കാൻ സാധ്യതയുള്ളതാണ്).
Note: 'Will' ന് പകരം Can, May, Shall എന്നിവയും വരാം.
Type 2: Improbable / Imaginary Condition
ഇത് വെറും സങ്കൽപ്പമാണ്. ഇപ്പോൾ നടക്കാൻ സാധ്യത കുറവാണ്. (If I won a lottery...)
💡 Formula
If + V2 (Past) ---------> Would + V1Eg: If you studied well, you would pass.
(നീ പഠിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ജയിക്കുമായിരുന്നു - പക്ഷെ നീ ഇപ്പോൾ പഠിക്കുന്നില്ല).
സങ്കൽപങ്ങളെക്കുറിച്ച് പറയുമ്പോൾ (ഞാനൊരു പക്ഷിയായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ..) എപ്പോഴും 'Were' ഉപയോഗിക്കണം. 'Was' ഉപയോഗിക്കരുത്.
Correct: If I were a bird, I would fly.
Wrong: If I
Type 3: Impossible Condition (Unfulfilled)
കഴിഞ്ഞുപോയ കാര്യത്തെക്കുറിച്ചാണ് ഇത് പറയുന്നത്. "അന്ന് അത് ചെയ്തിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഇന്ന് ഇത് സംഭവിക്കുമായിരുന്നു". ഇനി അത് തിരുത്താൻ കഴിയില്ല.

If + Had + V3 ---------> Would have + V3Eg: If you had studied well, you would have passed.
(നീ അന്ന് നന്നായി പഠിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ, അന്ന് ജയിക്കുമായിരുന്നു - നീ പഠിച്ചില്ല, ജയിച്ചതുമില്ല).

Advanced Tip: 'Had' at the beginning
ചിലപ്പോൾ 'If' ഒഴിവാക്കി വാചകം 'Had' വെച്ച് തുടങ്ങാറുണ്ട്. അപ്പോഴും Type 3 യുടെ നിയമം (Would have + V3) തന്നെയാണ് ബാധകമാകുന്നത്.
Eg: Had I known this, I would have helped you.
(= If I had known this...)
