ഒരാൾ പറഞ്ഞ കാര്യം മറ്റൊരാളോട് റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്നതാണ് Indirect Speech. ഇത് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ ഇൻവെർട്ടഡ് കോമ (" ") ഒഴിവാക്കുക മാത്രമല്ല, വാചകത്തിന്റെ കാലം (Tense), സമയം (Time), സ്ഥലം (Place) എന്നിവയിലും മാറ്റങ്ങൾ വരുത്തേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.
1. Tense Changes (ഒരു സ്റ്റെപ്പ് പുറകോട്ട്)
റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുന്ന വെർബ് (said, told) Past Tense-ൽ ആണെങ്കിൽ, ഉദ്ധരണിക്കുള്ളിലെ വാചകത്തിന്റെ Tense മാറ്റണം. ലളിതമായി പറഞ്ഞാൽ Present-ൽ ഉള്ളവ Past-ലേക്കും, Past-ൽ ഉള്ളവ Past Perfect-ലേക്കും മാറണം.

റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ സമയം മാറുന്നത് കൊണ്ട്, സമയസൂചക വാക്കുകളും മാറ്റണം.

- Tomorrow → The next day / The following day

3. Reporting Questions (ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനം)
ചോദ്യങ്ങളെ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ സാധാരണ വാചകങ്ങളെ പോലെ 'That' ഉപയോഗിക്കാൻ പാടില്ല.
💡 പ്രധാന നിയമങ്ങൾ
1. 'Asked' അല്ലെങ്കിൽ 'Enquired' ഉപയോഗിക്കുക.2. ചോദ്യത്തിന്റെ ഘടന മാറ്റണം: Subject + Verb എന്ന രീതിയിലാകണം.
3. Do/Does/Did എന്നിവ ഒഴിവാക്കണം.
Type A: Wh-Questions (What, Where, Why...)
ചോദ്യവാക്ക് (Question word) അതുപോലെ തന്നെ നിലനിർത്തുക.
Direct: He asked me, "Where are you going?"
Indirect: He asked me where I was going.
(ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക: 'Where was I' എന്ന് എഴുതരുത്. Subject ആദ്യം വരണം).
Type B: Yes/No Questions (Are you, Do you...)
ഇവിടെ ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കാൻ If അല്ലെങ്കിൽ Whether ഉപയോഗിക്കണം.
Direct: He asked, "Are you happy?"
Indirect: He asked if I was happy.
4. കല്പനകളും അപേക്ഷകളും (Imperatives)
"Please give me a pen", "Don't go there" തുടങ്ങിയ വാചകങ്ങൾ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യാൻ എളുപ്പമാണ്.
Positive: Requested/Ordered + to + Verb
Negative: Ordered + not to + Verb
- Direct: "Please help me," she said.
Indirect: She requested to help her. - Direct: "Don't smoke," the doctor said.
Indirect: The doctor advised not to smoke.
5. ആശ്ചര്യ വാചകങ്ങൾ (Exclamatory)
അത്ഭുതം പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുന്ന വാചകങ്ങൾ റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ Exclaimed that ഉപയോഗിക്കണം. വാചകം സാധാരണ പ്രസ്താവനയാക്കി മാറ്റണം.
Direct: He said, "Alas! I am ruined."
Indirect: He exclaimed with sorrow that he was ruined.
6. മാറ്റം വരാത്ത സാഹചര്യം (Universal Truths)
സാർവത്രിക സത്യങ്ങൾ (Universal Truths) റിപ്പോർട്ട് ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ Tense മാറ്റാൻ പാടില്ല.
Direct: The teacher said, "The sun rises in the east."
Indirect: The teacher said that the sun rises in the east. (Rises -> Rose ആകില്ല).
